collaborative painting
You Belong by Nina and Malachi Schmidt
The owl painting ” you belong” marks the first in many collaborations between myselfand my oldest of three children. Malachi, now 7 years old, was diagnosed with autism at age 5. We’ve struggled with all this diagnosis brings, however what stands out about our son is not the label of autism but who he is as a person in spite of it. Malachi is a brilliant artist. He has found an area in his life that brings him joy and confidence. A favorite quote of his came after a particularly hard day. We sat down to paint and a calm came over him.As he painted he said “See, I told you, I’m happy now. I’m not sad at all.” Look deeper. Celebrate your children. They have so much to teach us.
